Holy Crap Granola

Been in the Granola making mode. Have made our own granola at various times.

This year, it started at Justin & Shelli's wedding. Shelli's sister, Staci made a whole lot of granola which we were given to use for our breakfasts the week before the wedding. Really enjoyed it for breakfast, and on ice cream.

Later this fall, we got the idea, well let's make some granola again.

Used to make some before, most recently in March. http://kingofgreen.blogspot.com/2010/03/granola-recipe-experiment.html
Went through the cookbook recipe again. Searched 4-5 recipe books on the shelf.
Came up wit a template recipe. Figured actual ingredients were less of an issue.
Rather the ratio of dry to oil, water, and sweetner.

So we made a batch. At the same time Greg was going to go on a ten-day backpacking trip, so some granola made into his load.

Meanwhile aftert the first batch a newspaper article came out in the Hamilton Spectator newspaper
http://www.thespec.com/living/familyparenting/article/278705--as-long-as-it-doesn-t-taste-the-way-it-sounds
So that peaked our (my) interest in Holy Crap granola.

Then some basics about chia seeds- good for vegetarian males, blood pressure, etc.

Btw here's the broad outlines for 2 large cookie sheets worth of delicious granola

7 Cups rolled flakes. This could include Oats, wheat, spelt, rye, kamut, and probably more. Oats are the least expensive.
4 Cups Small dry cereals. This category could include: Wheat germ, 12 grain cereal, flax seeds or ground flax, oat bran, sesame seeds, buckwheat, steel cuts oats, corn meal, bulgur, chia seeds(if you want Holy Crap type)
Amaranth seeds - do not put too much more than a tablespoon in as that ends up being a lot of seeds. Too many and the granola has a sandy feeling.
2 cups of sunflower or pumpkins seeds.
Mix then add
1 Tbsp vanilla
3/4 c oil
1 1/4 cup water
2 tsp salt
3/4 c liquid or melted honey (
but brown sugar, jam or other sweetners can be used)
Mix well, Preheat oven to 250 degrees F
Place on trays

Bake 1 1/2 hrs. Stir every 30 minutes.
After
Addd 4 cups dried fruit.
Dried fruit raisins, cranberries add color but are more expensive, dried coconuts
other options: Can chop dates, apricots, figs
Dried currants are good

Add 2 Cups of nuts such as; almond slivers, walnut pieces, chopped cashews, chopped peanuts, etc.

Snow & the Seed Catalog

We're happy to not be in the SNOWMAGEDDONin  London, Ontario which is reeling under a metre of snow that's fallen in the last day or so. While Hamilton and Stoney Creek had just a light dusting of flurries, here in Hagersville, we got about a couple of inches.

What should appear but the William Dam seed catalog.
Gardening can be a lot of fun, relaxation, - a fine hobby, but it can be a lot of work too.
Maybe we should cut back next year? But when you start looking at all the new varieties...
then well, maybe we could try growing some of those.

Ah the challenges of gardening- they always start with the seed catalog. Spring can't be that far away. . .  .

Toadstools

Visiting in Minihaha Falls Park in Minneapolis.
I suspect that a tree was removed from this lawn sometime in the past year or 2. The fungus organisms decaying and decomposing the roots have popped up their fruiting (reproductive) structures= mushrooms, because of the weather conditions.

Mount Rainier Washington State

Greetings from Craig
These are recent views of Mount Rainier in Washington State, where I used to live.   The 14,500 ft. Mt.  Rainier  puts on a show from time to time and anyone who has seen it peeking out around Seattle will appreciate these pictures. I know people were pulling over on the freeway to take pictures, driving the state police and ET crazy.

This signals that a dry streak is about to come to an end and the Seattle drizzle is about to restart.

Those are called "lenticular clouds"  They're caused when the air flow is just right so when it flows over Mt. Rainier , the air gets pushed upward where it cools and condenses into clouds. Depending on how smooth the flow is, you can get some amazing clouds formations as we've seen so far today.
It's usually a sign of rain within 24 hours because typically the moist
flow that precedes a storm around here is the perfect set up for these clouds.

This one is from a friend in Gig  Harbor :

And one is a similar phenomenon over Mount St Helens :

A bit of natures' beauty!

Who ate the cat food?

This picture is not very clear. Our adopted cat Joey finally came out of hiding. At least we thought he did because the cat food we left on the verandah was disappearin
g each night. But why was the water in the water dish always muddy.

I said, raccoons are known to wash their food. There's been a raccoon eating the cat food.

No, No. It's the cat.
Well the cat started to come around, came in the house, ate some cat food. We even saw it eating out of the dish if we were still up and watching.

But last night, a creature with a mask and a striped tail showed up at the door.

Guess we'll try to control the table setting for the cat food.
